Stock pickers have always enjoyed the personal research, flavor, and stakes of picking winners in the market, but now they can enjoy many of those same elements with a little less risk. Actively managed funds have gotten more popular each year, and that intersection with thematic funds is growing. The number of actively managed thematic funds grew by 8% this year. Cathie Wood’s Ark ETFs undoubtedly helped lead this charge and legitimized it in the eyes of investors but big names like JPMorgan and BlackRock are in the mix as well. Active funds can also invest in smaller or niche segments of the economy where a rules-based ETF simply wouldn’t work. Thematic funds scratch that same itch of being bullish in segments of the market, or themes like ESG.
